Protects workers, clients, residents and the environment from injury, infection and exposure arising from sharps, drug paraphernalia, bodily-fluid waste and contaminated materials.

Scope
Needles, syringes, contaminated blades, razors, broken glass, bodily-fluid waste, contaminated PPE, absorbent materials and other hazardous or clinical-type waste.

Sharps handling and unknown substances
Do not handle by hand, bend, break or recap. Isolate the area, use good lighting, use tools, place the container close, never overfill, never push down and never place hands where visibility is poor.
Unknown powders, liquids or suspected drugs must not be handled as routine waste. Stop, isolate and escalate.
Waste documentation and spills
Record date, site, waste description, quantity, container, carrier, destination, transfer or consignment reference, staff and exceptions. For spill or container failure, stop work, isolate, use the assessed spill response, notify management, repackage safely, record and investigate.
